A Conversation for Adult Comic Books

Eros Comics

The American "Eros Comics" imprint does not seem to
be publishing much original material these days,
instead focussing on translated Japanese manga
titles such as the misleadingly titled "Bondage
Fairies" - which probably would not sell as well
as "Forest Fairies" or even "Fetish Fairies". The
only issues I remember seeing that featured people
being tied up also featured at least one of them
chopping her hand off to get free, which rather
takes away the fetish frisson! Still, a copy of
the Eros catalogue can probably still be obtained
direct from Fantagraphics Books in Seattle, with a
variety of things on offer; small packets by air
mail may well escape the eagle eyes of the quaint
old English customs.

Thinking further about this, of course the real problem with the standard American adult comics from Eros and its competitors is that the general public perception of comics, both here and in America, is that they are "for kids". In fact, that tends to be the problem for all comics, including the h2g2 adaptation that DC published! Still, not many people get het up about adult pay-tv channels on hotel televisions, or glossy magazines as long as they are on the top shelf, but because there is a preconception that comics are solely produced for the delectation of 10-year old BEANO readers, the forces of decency come down on an Eros title like "School for Submission" like the proverbial ton of bricks... or would if they came across it. I only came across this forum because I idly typed "Lara Croft" into the search engine. There is actually a new "Tomb Raider" comic out from Image, and of course they are careful to keep it all-ages. Check out your local comics store for details, as they say.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
