The Once Upon a Time in the West Issue

Time has been kind to the classic western

Westerns are in a class by themselves. There are those who hate them and there are those who will watch almost nothing else. Westerns are in a class by themselves because so few other movies, outside of so-called 'action thrillers', which are basically Westerns that don't have any plot and don't take place a hundred and thirty years ago, and so-called 'action dramas', which are basically Westerns that have a plot and could happen at any time in history. Then there
are the si-fi and fantasy flicks, which are basically Westerns without any firearms or with fantastic firearms, which take place on a final frontier someplace otherwhen. The Western is an international phenomenon, irritating critics and viewers the world over. At one point, in the sixties, there were more Westerns made in Germany and Italy and Spain than there had ever been in the US and Australia. Come to think of it... when was the last time a Western was made in Australia?
