I have an online friend from the US who bemoans the fact that she can't get trousers or skirts that will fit her. She has recently come of medication that was affecting her weight, and she now has an 8" difference between her waist size and her hip size. In the UK that's not a problem. The difference between waist and hip size over here is traditionally about 10". In the US, they expect you not to have a waist. Either people over there are a different shape because of different weight distribution, or the US has gone further with 'size zero' than the rest of the world.
