Though Ultima 3 was revolutionary back in the day, bringing a new style of gameplay which has been copied a thousand fold by other clones.
Ultima 4 brought a new style of gameplay based one something that most of todays games are lacking, but it is generally thought that as long as the graphics are better the explosions are louder then things like gameplay and plot can go to hell.
U4 though, had a superior plot and based the game about you, the hero, becoming the inspiriation of the people by leading them out of an age of darkness and into an age of virtuous enlightenment and morality. You won't find that concept in many games these days. In fact the amount of wisdom in the game was obviously very well researched.
Oh, and the music ruled.
