When I first saw the title of the article, I immediately thought of a book I have read called Lethe (I forget who it's by) in which, due to genetic engineering, a species has developed (called altermoders) who can communicate with dolphins. They have formed an organisation called The League of New Alchemists, which is headed by The Heads (or Pickled Brains) who are brains detached from their bodies. It's really interesting.
