We have this in my area(Long Island,New York).I've seen local businesses band together and barter their particular skills or products.It doesn't seem to be taking off in a big way.

Commercial Barter in the US does $20 billion per year. But you are right, local, small barter clubs could be doing so much better. They often need someone to act as the go between. This agent is often paid a commission in cash for organising the deals.
