"Diogenes' power lay in the fact that he was untouchable" - after having not washed for twenty odd years I should imagine anyone would be untouchable... I wonder if this unsavoury aspect of Cynicism is the origin of early Christian ideas re. physical uncleanliness being a sign of the mortification of the body in favour of the spirit?

(After all, cleanliness is next to Godliness only in a very strange dictionary...)
