I seem to remember reading somewhere that the old timers in the village of Stiffkey actually pronounced it "Stew-key". Is this correct?? Anyone any evidence for or against??

As far as I am aware having lived in Norfolk since 1978 it is still pronounced "stoo - key" by locals

Dear 151696,
There has always been the rumour in modern times about Stewky being the correct pronounciation. In fact most people who come from there pronounce it as it is written Stiffkey. The origins are Norman and its original name was "Siff Kay" meaning Safe harbour.
