Although the wrestlers themselves confer to produce the actual action, referees control the flow of the bout. They react to cues from the announcing table , relaying to the wrestlers when it's time for a break in television time, or when the match is drawing no heat from the crowd (in which case they go straight into the arranged finishing sequence). Other set-pieces include reacting to outside interference and signalling to the backstage area for a run-in by 'security' or another wrestler or wrestlers.
So they are useful after all! B->
