A Conversation for Nice, France
A good base

I was in Nice for a week a few months ago, and while I am not a great fan of the place (everytime I went into the city a disaster used to befall me such as losing or breaking my shopping, getting soaked, or eating a very poor meal), it is a great base for visiting the south of France.
The area around Nice is very mountainous, so it is one of the few places in Europe where you can go skiing and swimming in the sea in the same day at certain times of the year. There are a few hills close to the city centre from where you can get an excellent view of the Cote d'Azur. In the old-town there are a number of very good restaurants.
The area around Nice is spectacular. You are a short hop from Cannes, Antibes, Monaco, the Italian Riviera and St Paul de Vence (one of those little villages crammed onto a small hilltop).
This part of the world is really expensive, so bring lots of money. If you take a journey to Italy you will find it a lot more reasonably priced. It is also a long walk from the Nice train station to the city centre.
