The beach in Nice is extremely uncomfortable - it consists mainly of rocks the size of your fist. You're much better off for sunbathing further West, somewhere like San Raphael.
Don't try sleeping on Nice beach, even if you can settle on the stones. Men with hoses come round at 6 every morning to wash it down and they take great pleasure in soaking unwary backpackers.

There are also sand flies which will bite you to death.... not a good idea.
