There are also the famous pennies of WWII... I think they were made of tin? Not sure on that. Also, the design on the back of pennies has changed greatly over the years. There used to be a design reading "ONE CENT" surrounded by olive branches.

All coins have changed through the years. It's just that the penny was the most recently changed of the common coins until the quarters changed in 1999. I think the pennies last changed in 1958.
During WWII we had two years when they made zinc pennies.
