Australian coins, you may be interested to know, are also running low. Its because there used to be special people who went around to shops and gave them coins but they all got sacked, so businesses have to go to the bank to get their coins now.
It's also interesting to note that the australian "silver" coins (5, 10, 20 and 50 cents) used to be made out of actual silver. At one point the silver in a 50 cents coin was worth 60 cents. Chaos ensued as people drew as many 50 cents coins from the bank as they could, ran to a metal exchange, traded the coins for a 20% profit and ran back to the bank for more coins!
