Actually I don't think I knew that, but iirc the Jack Nicholson version was the one I saw. I'd read the book years before the movie.. Remember when -that- happened? When movies took a long time after a book? Now it seems they start looking for a movie deal even before publishing.

I know a film that's better than the book

The Shawshank Redemption was based on a story by Stephen King called, erm, I can't actually remember now. What's the name of the actress who's poster Tim Robbins wants so's he can cover up the hole he's digging in the wall? well the Stephen King story is "(her name) and the Shawshank Redemption." The film's much better. One of my very favourite films. I've read the Bond books as well, and I love'em, but I love the films as well. Except of course On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which is bloody awful, namely cos it's got Kojak as Blofeld, and that Australian idiot George LAzenby as Bond. Die Another Day was rubbish as well.

Rita hayworth and the Shawshank redemption.
Also, OHMSS was really quite good. Very sad. DAD was pretty bad.
