A Conversation for The Long Weekend

Ya'know- that one guy! Started conversation Oct 13, 2002
It sounds to me like exactly the way things work. I try to stay home on those weekends- Catch up on sleep, reading, and/or... well, never mind.
Can anyone explain the connection between Bank Holidays (something I had never heard of, since I'm an American) and USA's three day weekends? Sounds conspicuous to me!
