Movie of HGtG

I just read that there will be a movie of HGtG.
Shocking idea, that! I don't like to have books made into a movie because much of your own imagination is thrown away when you watch the film.
And with HGtG it's really important for me, that there won't be a film. Even if it will be the best film ever (what I'm sure of), it won't be as good as you own imagination is.

I compleatly agree. I have recently come across a tape of the HGtG TV show and it wasn't half as good as the book. However, I can't wait to see the movie just because I think it would be interesting to see it come to life. Anyway, just remember that the movie and the book are two compleatly different things. Don't let the movie change the way you think about the book.

Yeah, the movie version of Yellow Submarine was like that. I liked my imagined version better. The HHGTTG movie will not be what I imagine.
But, hey yeah, they already made a TV version of HHHGTTG - a real BBC, low budget gem - but it was great British TV!
No, you're right SamWolf, as fellow Canuck Marshall MacLuhan would point out, a book is a book and does a book thing. But a movie is a movie and it's supposed to hit a different area of your brain.

Just be thankful you never saw the Stage show of HHHGTTG - for me although the books were good the Radio series remains the definitive version of HHHGTTG.

Radio! The only true successor to storytelling by the elders round the campfire. The printed word, the moving picture are nice. But the 'racial memory' is an oral tradition, the spoken word, the story heard.
Give me radio or give me radio!

Followed your link to other movie conversation. Thanks. I thot for a moment if would lead to the purchase of said tapes from BBC and discovered it's just a rant against American actors being considered for the movie. Well as I said above 'a movie is just a movie but a good book will never replace radio'.

Hmmm. Yeah, the Radio Series was totally awesome, but the TV series is "the one" as far as the appearance of the characters go. I saw the TV series first, whe I was a wee boy and it was broadcast for the first time here in Australia, and for me, while reading the books or listening to the Radio series, when I hear dialogue I see teh characters from teh TV series. Of course, Simon Jones was Arthur in both the TV and Radio series, but David Dixon shall always be Ford for me. Shame the guys are getting on a bit these days because it would be totally AWESOME to see Simon, David and Mark reprise their characters in the movie (which I'm pretty much hanging out for). As far as Trillion goes, never did like the girl from the TV series, nor was I that impressed with Susan Sheridan (she was ok). Hopefully, they'll cast her character really well for the movie because when they make the sequals, in which Trillian will always be a non-minor character, a decent Trillian is essential. Oh, one last thing... They absolutely MUST MUST MUST use Stephen Moore for Marvin (here's hoping the DON'T go with a similar design for Marvin to the one in the Illustrated H2G2)
Cheers, Edan

Personally, I'd like to see a movie made of H2G2. The reason? In all of the many and varied versions of H2G2 that there have already been (radio, books, TV, albums, etc) there have always been differences. For example, the Lintillas only ever appeared in the radio series and the talking main course from the TV series wasn't in the radio version.
These differences keep the story fresh and interesting; whilst revisiting well-known and loved parts of the story ("rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty), you get new things too.
There has been talk for years about the movie and it never seemed to go anywhere. I hope that this time it does.

i was watching bbc this morning and doug adams said he was thinking about a movie but it would probably never happen, but it would be a great experience for everybody.
i first heard hgttg at my junior school (aged 9) as read by my class tutor(mr walsh)he put so much colour into it. voices and stuff, then when the tv series was made i loved it. im now 30 and still read mostly harmless quite often and is still raises a smile.
the movie would make a lot of people happy and who knows somebody may even develop a hgttg handheld ?????

Hmmmm...
"i was watching bbc this morning and doug adams said he was thinking about a movie but it would probably never happen, but it would be a great experience for everybody."
Interesting... I saw Douglas on TV here talking about the Hiker movie, among other things, a while ago (latter part of last year) and he actually said it was as far as being in the hands of US guys and so far he was very happy with the way things were going (script, etc).
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what develops.
Just to be slightly off topic, wouldn't a full blown Dirk Gently series be grand?

But who would play Mr Cjelli? They'd probably get somebody totally inappropriate like little Kenny Branagh or some awful American, like Matthew "pass the slimming pills" Perry.
Although, having said that, Drew Carey might do it justice...

Drew Carey would be a wonderful Dirk, I agree. But I firmly beleive that any British book made into a television show or a movie should be done by the same people who made it originally; THE BRITISH. Americans (being one I know what they do to things like that), should never attempt to beautify it, when all they go and do isdeform the purity of a British confection.

I agree. Renee Zellwegger and what's her face, Oscar crying Shakespear In Love bird, just don't cut it I'm afraid. In the book, Bridget Jones was NOT posh!

The suggestion of a Dirk Gently series
Wolfie Posted Apr 17, 2001
I agree about avoiding Americans in Brit films, but usually to get any funding and / or media coverage every Brit film has to have an American - especially if it is a Working Title production (Four Weddings, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones).
The other unfortunate aspect of avoiding Americans is that there are only so many Brit actors they are likely to use and I wouldn't want to see Hugh Grant or Robert Carlyle take the role on.

I recently heard that the HGtG movie, which was to be made by (did I get this right) Disney?, was put on hold due to DNA's demise. I say it should continue in it's production.

Another thread (I forget where) has a link to a BBC news item saying they're going to publish one last DNA book, containing the sixth part of the HHGTTG trilogy as reconstructed from various contradictory files on his laptop, some other journals... and the movie screenplay!
