It's an early form of synthesiser/sequencer type instrument, one of the first instruments that could have a piece of music programmed into it, which it would then play back of its own accord. Most people used it to play the fast, repetitive basslines you hear on '80s dance records, but FZ saw greater potential in the instrument, and wrote hugely complex pieces which he would then program into the Synclavier and let it play them back. His "Jazz From Hell" album is a good example of this.
