I have my own system doing this. I put all my rubbish in moving boxes and then stuff them down the basement or were boxes normaly is placed.

Are these "moving boxes" self propelled? Ore is an external moving constraption needed?

"Moving boxes"? Perhaps not as strange as one may think. I too have used unusually large boxes to store/dump various possessions in my room in order to maintain the floor in a navigable state. However, since then, I have begun to notice the appearance of a number of smaller boxes, usually forming around items such as magazines and loose change.

I do not know if this is the result of infestation, asexual reproduction, or some as yet undiscovered gravitational property found in boxes of an unusually large size. I can take some comfort that, at least for the time being, the presence of this box colony is quite benign. And tidy.

This is likely an "inhabited-room" version of the device installed in clothes-washers and -dryers that habitually consume socks.

Perhaps the socks rematerialise in these boxes?

Alas, in my daily hunt for absent socks I have never found one (let alone a pair) in one of my boxes, large or small (boxes, not socks).

Which is a pity, for if there were some way of marrying the two phenomena together - ie that of self-replicating cardboard receptacles, and that of vanishing footwear - some way of bending space and time so that one could transported into the other, I believe the world would be a much better place.

And why stop with just socks? Surely the same laws of physics could be applied to biros, car keys, chess pieces, the list is endless. Just think of the reduction to international stress levels if these problems could be resolved.
