For future update:
The USDA has counted the apple trees

They say there are 8,560,000 apple trees in the state with over 21 varieties from Courtlands, to Ida Reds to Winesap and Northern Spy.

Further research showed that in 2010 the US produced just over 225 million barrels of apples.
65% of those came from Washington State.
Michigan ranked second with 6.8% of the crop.
This was followed by Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California.
