Statuette changing color

My grandparents had a statuette in their living room shelf, looking much like a boy and his donkey. It used to be white, but before heavy rain, it would turn into a purple-like color. Strange. Veeery strange. I used to observe it for hours, waiting for the color to change. It usually did when I looked the other way, though.
