I have it on good authority that you do need to tap the glass because the needle on the circular variety has to overcome the spring & only does this if you tap "oh so gently"!

I believe too that aneroid type barometers require a gentle tap as the mechanism is made deliberately "stiff" so that tapping the barometer reveals whether the pressure is rising or falling as the pointer moves. P&R Labpak Limited (www.prlabs.co.uk).
