The image of swinging on a rope bears no relation to how bellringing is actually done. There is a much better animated image of a bell and ringer available on this site: http://fortran.orpheusweb.co.uk/Bells/software/change.htm

Ooh, that is good! I remember I spend quite a while looking for a decent .gif and didn't find anything way back when I updated this article.
Many thanks for your contribution!
I gather from your name that you're a ringer too? I'm sadly laped these days as I don't have a local tower.

Yes, I am. You might like to look at the website of my home tower, which has lots of info for non-ringers as well as ringers: http://allsaintswokinghambells.org.uk/

It looks like you have a solid band there.
My 'home' tower (I haven't lived there since I left home, but it's where I learnt to ring) is here: http://www.odg.org.uk/history/onb/blewbury.html
I'm hoping to move to this village and join their band: http://www.sacbr.org.uk/Baschurch/Baschurch.htm
It was interesting trying to write this article without the benefit of diagrams (it's something that the site doesn't support at the moment). It's not a problem for most articles, but every now and then you wish you could just *show* someone ho it works.

thanks for the working image,i have just started bell ringing and it helps to see what is happening to the bell when the rope is being pulled!

Hopefully once we've got through the move I can ask our artists to come up with an image that's much better than the current one.
Well done for talking the plunge judith - it's great fun!
