It's only the middle of the Royal Mile that's called High Street, the bottom end is Cannongate and the top end (i think) is Cowgate - where a ghostly carrage rides through the streets at middnight, or something.
Cowgate?

For anyone checking this out, the Cowgate is a completely different street entirely. It runs parallel to the High Street on the South and at a distinctly lower level. It's name derives from the fact that in the past when Edinburgh still had city walls, the gate here was the main entrance for livestock coming into the city.
Interestingly the street is now best known for it's many late-night bars and clubs - so perhaps those who named it had a slight prophetic streak
