I read somewhere once that tungsten bulbs could last forever but that they are deliberately manufactured to 'burn out' to ensure continued sales. Does anyone know whether this is true or just an urban myth?

"That is an urban myth.
Manufacturers can produce longer lasting tungsten wire lightbulbs in a near vacuum bulb at a much higher cost. Such bulbs are for sale and last more then double the normal life, but with a manyfold higher price there is not much market. "

Running below the rated voltage helps too. Light is a bit dimmer, but often such lights are needed just to be on for ever.

LED surely is probably the closest to everlasting lightbulbs?

"They surely last longer then any other 'illumination'.
I am using LEDs at the moment, they are on for more then a year by now. Though reduced about 25% in strength they will last longer then any other alternative so far. Take care not to use 'ultra bright LEDs' as those probably last less longer then 'standard' brightness. "
