A Conversation for Old Wives' Tales

A Stand Against Fat

There is a certain tradition with many of locals in my area, I'm not sure if it is a totally ligit Old Wives Tale, bu it seemed to fit. It is said round these parts, usually to someone worried about the fat content of a food, that if you eat it standing up, it is fat free. I'm am quite unware of the origins of this fact (myth, whatever) but it seems quite popular in the doughnut shop downtown. So, Stand Up, and Eat Up, It's Fat Free!

Sounds a bit like the myth that if you have sex standing up you won't get pregnant!!

I always heard that if you ate from the table bowl, then you wouldn't get fat 'coz there are no calories in the bowl, only on the plate.

Oh, I forgot, "Fast Food is Fat Food". This one can't be "An Old Wives Tale" though 'coz there wasn't fast food then.

uh . . how DID they live without McDonalds?

How about 'Only eat the broken biscuits at the bottom of the tin/end of the pack/bottom of the cookie jar. Because they are broken, all the calories will have leaked out.'

Why is it that people (myself included) always start their diets on a Monday. Is there something about Monday's that makes low-calorie foods taste better and look more appetising? New Year's Day must be some kind of super-Monday.

I think the reason many people may start their diets on Mondays is that, as a general rule Mondays are so bad, that how much can a silly little diet ruin it even more. I personally know several people that start diets on Mondays. They say it nicely counterpoints the rest of the horribleness of Mondays. They also say that starting a diet on Monday, greatly increases the amount they can enjoy their Tuesday, when they sussequently decide that they have much better things to do than eat sugarless, calorieless, sugarless, fatless, tasteless food. Like eat REAL food.
