A Conversation for Old Wives' Tales
Sometimes old wives are right!

Some of these tales are grounded in good solid fact. Carrots are a good source of Vitamin A, which you need to be able to see in the dark, though with a normal Western diet you're unlikely to be deficient just by avoiding carrots. And Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning - a very nasty disease - is caused by eating shellfish contaminated with red algae, which bloom in the summer months (those without 'r's are May, June, July and August.) Most shellfish are safe even at these times, but shellfish eaten at other times of year should be absolutely safe.
Of course, just because some old wives' tales are sensible doesn't mean they all are!
