If you can't afford a water butt strategically place around the garden buckets to catch the rain (I use an old plastic bin).
The buckets come in handy (when empty) when working in the garden and you have a supply of water near your plants.

That's great, thanks for posting, although you have to be careful with uncovered water because it can get creepy crawlies living in it that aren't very nice.
