I'm just coming out of a battle with the little buggers. My normally docile cat was being driven insane by the diminutive biters and had confined himself to the bathtub, where he could at least see them coming. And my ankles are covered in bites, bumps and welts.
Taking no chances, I've gone the full-out, war-waging path - flea bombed the apartment, used Frontline (spot treatment) on Mulder (the cat) and have aerosol spray to pick off the survivors.
I started on Monday night, and have so far seen only four fleas (out of the hundreds I started off with) and am hoping that will be the end of them.
The cat is still loopy (he's paranoid of the carpet now and jumps from coffee table to end table to bookshelf trying to avoid it) and covered with scabs, bites and leftover flea poop. I'm thinking a nice relaxing flea dip is in order. Possibly for myself as well, just for the peace of mind.
My first, and hopefully, last encounter with the f*****s.

I have been battling the little bastards myself. i have used i believe tabstar??? some kind of pill, no real effect that i could tell. two flea dips, and i used biospot??? i think, i used sergeants gold spray, helped but they survived. now i am going to use frontlineplus? on the cats tomorrow, and get them out and bomb the house. hopefully will work. resiliant little things.

make sure to wash your bed stuff the little the things can hide in there pretty well so some times the bombs don't reach them. besides there may be some bomb stuff left in there

Lots of posts all at the same time - must be the time of year for the little whinnets. Sprayed my house and my cats twice already but they keep coming back. The problem is that you can't spray the whole house at once (or else where can you stay) and the only way to hold a cat to spray them is from by the scruff of the neck. Anywhere else and they will rip you to shreds. Which means there's always one spot where you can't spray.
Thanks to this h2g2 page I think my next solution is the dab on the back of the neck every month (for the cats). At least then if there's an egg in the house somewhere that I miss then there'll be nowhere for the fleas to feed, which should break the cycle.
And you've only got to find one on you to imagine your skin crawling with them. I didn't sleep too well last night and daren't visit any friends who have cats in case I vector one into their house. I'm pretty sure how that's how I got mine in the first place.
Just keep thinking that Eddie Izzard routine. "I'm covered in bees."
"'Aaargh! I'm covered in fleaas. Aah! Covered in fleas!'"
