Would it not be fair to say that a good deal of the popularity of bouzouki music can be attributed to the 1964 film 'Zorba the Greek' with music written by Mikos Theodorakis (http://www.ffolio.com/abarchive/film/zorba.html )
I certainly have found the music frequently included in compilations of 'greek music' - like the 'Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond' in Scottish 'tourist' compilations.
