A Conversation for Bouzoukis
The Cheese SHop - A Missed Opportunity
The Apprentice Started conversation Jul 15, 2003
If I've ever seen a true lost chance to use a quote, this has to be it. The only time I've ever heard the word 'bouzouki' used before now was in the legendary Cheese Shop sketch by the Python team:
(customer MOUSEBENDER seeking to buy cheese, but apparently about 50 points higher on the IQ scale than the cheese salesman, WENSLEYDALE)
WENSLEYDALE (Palin):
Oh, I thought you were complaining about the bouzouki player.
MOUSEBENDER (Cleese):
Oh, heaven forbid. I am one who delights in all manifestations of the Terpsichorean muse.
WENSLEYDALE:
Sorry?
MOUSEBENDER:
(In a broad Yorkshire accent) Ooo, I like a nice tune - you're forced to.
Trust me... missed opportunity!

I considered putting that quote in (I even discussed it in Peer Review), but the words just aren't funny on their own. It is only the combination of the words with the irritating antics in the background all during the sketch that make it hilarious.

'Syrtaki' is the name of the dance they were doing in that sketch.
