I would agree that acronyms are even worse than jargon What's more they aren't unique, creating even greater confusion.
TLA's used to be the preferred format for computer vendors such as IBM. TLA stands for Three Letter Acronym. You can probably describe all longer acronyms as ETLA's - Extended Three Letter Acronyms!
HAL (the computer in 2001) is alleged to be an encryption of IBM applying a Caeser shift of 25 (or -1 - the letter before in the alphabet).

It's the other way around, I think. Didn't 2001 get published long before the advent of IBM? So IBM is HAL +1. At least that's what I heard.

IBM (International Business Machines, has been around for a very long time). Perhaps you're thinking of the IBM PC.
