Lundy is the last known breeding ground for black rats in the UK, and one of the last colonies of black rats in the world. Unfortuately the rats are known to attack puffins and their young in the underground nests, which some say has severely reduced the population. This caused an ecological quandary. Should the rats be culled to protect the birds (which everybody likes), or should they be allowed to breed because they are, comparatively speaking, an endangered species?
The decision was made to cull the rats, causing outcry among some environmental groups. There's a news story about the cull here:
