A Conversation for Hershey's Kisses
The Taste Test

While thorough enough, the article - alas - doesn't touch upon the actual taste of the Kiss. While some might say - "Heck, it's just chocolate..." - this would be a short-sighted comment to make. The Swiss, for example, wouldn't sell so much chocolate if all chocolate simply tasted the same.
The Hershey's Kiss probably only appeals to the American appetite. Having tried the confection myself the chocolate is weak and low in creamy content - robbing the chocolate of its texture and taste. A Kiss could be likened to the skimmed milk of the chocolate world.

This is true... The Hershey's Kiss is so weak in flavour. Chocolate needs to have a full, rich flavour. If it doesn't then it may as well be fed to the dogs.

This is a debate that I wanted to avoid while writing the entry...
To people in the USA, the taste of Hershey's Chocolate is what we're accustomed to. Hershey's mass production techniques brought this style and taste of chocolate to the masses before they had a chance to try the rich creamy 'European' style of milk chocolate.
This wasn't helped when M&M/Mars used Hershey's chocolate in all of their early confections - so really Hershey's chocolate became the standard for milk chooclate taste in the USA.
I've heard some Europeans speculate that Milton Hershey scalded the milk in his original recipe (and given the fact that he smoked cigars his whole life he probably wouldn't have noticed if he had). But if you mention this to a Yank, they'll just look at you strangely.
But thanks for the input!

VILE!!!
(please note the use of 3 exclamation marks)
on the other hand the hershey cookies and cream bar he got at the same time was quite palatable.

Wilbur buds ARE better... seriously. Take one milk kiss and one milk bud and place them in front of you. Look at the creamy exterior of the bud in comparison to the pasty complexion of the kiss... then place one (it matters not which) in your mouth. Savor. Put the other in you mouth after clearing the taste from your mouth with milk or something. Compare. Wilbur's always wins.

It's all about marketing...
Who outside of a very few of us have ever heard of Wilbur Buds?
Sounds like somebody needs to go to Lititz and write an entry.

I haven't been to the Wilbur tour since I was a little kid...
Perhaps I should take my own little kids down there this summer?

There's not much to the tour. I think it's a room. Less money spent on attractions, more on chocolate quality.

yep ... when I lived in America when I was 12 we had to get people to post us chocolate as we couldn't stand the american stuff. It makes me cringe thinking about it! ..

Seeing the number of Researchers who have commented on the disappointing flavour of Hersey's Kisses I feel glad my experience with them, that I mentioned when this was in PR, seems not uncommon. They ended up in the bin
I suppose it was a good idea to try and stay objective in the Entry Jimi - I just hope Researchers reading it take note of the conversations too, and avoid disappointment when tasting their first Kiss.

This American researcher mail-orders her chocolate from Europe. Maison du Chocolat will have it here in 48 hours.
(mmmm - chocolate - drifts off into a daydream...)
I agree that mass-produced American chocolate is pretty lousy, but most people here have never tasted the good stuff, so they don't know any better. Fortunately my mother was born and raised in Europe, and the grandparents sent us good candy regularly; we kids were brought up right.
I'm embarrassed to admit, though, that I love M&M's. One bag of milk chocolate M&M's plus one bag of peanut butter M&M's: mix 'em together in a bowl and eat the whole thing. There's just no accounting for taste (or lack of)...
