The world is full of uplifiting, extrovert,
positive music - and as the founder of P.U.D.D.I.N.G. (People United in Defence of Depression,
Irritability and Natural Grumpiness) I felt that it was time to fight back. I
thought it was time for our movement to have its very own anthem.
In a spirit of subversion, I decided to co-opt the tune of one of the most
infuriatingly cheerful songs of the last 20 years: Bobby McFerrin's 'Don't
Worry, Be Happy'. Originally, the P.U.D.D.I.N.G. version was called 'Don't Cheer
Up, Be Grumpy', but P.U.D.D.I.N.G. member Roadkill
pointed out that this could be taken to mean that cheering up was a realistic
option, which obviously isn't a message that we would wish to send.
So we ended up with what you see below: 'Don't Hide It, Be Grumpy', a title
that perfectly encapsulates the philosophy of P.U.D.D.I.N.G. 'Don't Worry, Be
Happy' only has two verses, but our version already has five - which just goes
to show the superiority of grumpiness over idiot positivism. If you can think of
more verses, just post 'em below and I'll add them to the anthem.
