I got this piece of advice from a seasoned performer on the club circuit:
"Never play John Tesh music in a bar with pool tables."

Surely the advice should read:
"Never play John Tesh music".

Excuse my musical ignorance here, but who is John Tesh and which genre of music does he play?

You can sample Tesh's music at amazon.com. Here is an excerpt of Amazon's review of one of his latest CD's that may partially answer the question:
QUOTE
Tesh, criticized at times for displays of bombast or excessive sentimentality in his compositions, here turns in a commendably restrained set ... "Smooth jazz" radio programmers rarely, if ever, grant exposure to solo piano selections, so Tesh generated airplay by recruiting two R&B vocalists, James Ingram and Dalia Reid, to make guest appearances on two tracks ... Nelson Rangell contributes saxophone ... but beyond that Tesh goes it alone ...a few high-register notes from "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" is a little corny ...
END QUOTE
I've cut out some of the "fluff", since Amazon is trying to sell CD's, after all.
Q: What do you get if you play an hour of New Age music backwards?
A: Another hour of New Age music.
