I don't really understand this... I was trying to work this out after I tried breathing helium at a party the other week...

If the speed of sound in your windpipe (...) is increased after breathing helium, then you would expect the frequency of sound to increase. But after the sound enters fresh air, again, it will surely slow down, and thus the effects would be cancelled out? Don't worry, I know this logic must be wrong, because I've tried it myself and it works! but what's wrong????

No problem there. The speed DOES gets smaller (on going from helium to air). But thats also why the ***frequency*** must get higher... Logic? You're just confusing speed with frequency.
