Birthdays and what to do on 'em...
JulesK Started conversation Sep 28, 2004
So, you have a Birthday coming up and (being still a touch childlike) wish to mark the occasion in some fashion.
Do you:
a) go away for a night to an overpriced hotel with your partner?
b) go out for a curry in your town so you can both drink and then roll back home on foot?
c) accept your partner's offer of a trip to Lisbon, even if it means 2.5 hours to the airport, 2 or 3 hours in the airport, ?2 hours on the plane.... what's left of Saturday and a night in Lisbon, then the same journey in reverse, with w**k on the Monday?
or d) forget all about it 'cos you're getting old and shouldn't 'do' Birthdays anymore?!

b)is perfect so long as you're coming home to an empty house
c)is fine, so long as you take a Friday and Monday off work
d) I don't think that's an option, is it Jules?
You having a h2g2 party?

*Answers own question, having seen Fb's journal at last*
Yep.
News on Birthday celebrations:
Spouse wondering why I feel the need for a meal out on the day itself (next Wednesday) and something special the following weekend.
Because Wednesday is a w**k day and I'm lovely and worth it and of course I should be spoilt every so often and what was the question again?!
Progress so far: nothing booked for either date and am NOT booking own B'day stuff

There's an outside chance...but usually he leaves it all until the last minute (any present will be bought on the day!) - then we get tense, because I'm sorry, I kind of think it matters.

We don't normally do much of anything special for my Birthiversary.
What, you've never heard of a birthiversary?
Very simple, actually... We got married on my birthday.
Anyhow, sometimes we go to a chinese restaurant or order pizza for the occasion. This year, our 17 yr old cooked dinner for us, although it was a new recipe I wanted her to try, so I had to help her with it a good bit. She washed the dishes for me afterwards.
There were a couple of small gifts, certainly nothing terribly expensive. (One kid in University, another starting next year... not a lot of extra cash lying around.)
Mostly we decided to start looking for new living room furniture. Which we may do soon, *if* all the appliances in the house would kindly stop breaking down!

I think the Spouse feels his birthday gets subsumed by our wedding anniversary, as they're six days apart. So any fuss about mine is too much to take!
The thing is, it's odd, 'cos he's really not too bothered about birthdays in general.
It's not that I'm mercenary about it - I'd settle for a balloon or two or a mystery meal (ie one I haven't cooked)!

Does he hope you'll surprise him on his birthday Jules?

Oh, I'm the one into all these birthday antics.
They're just not so reciprocated
He's lovely though

I'm finally at the point where I really don't mind cooking. And now that I have a stove again, that helps too.
The stress of trying to figure out *what* to cook on any given day was always the worst of it.
I have a whole new source of recipes though, and they're not only quick and easy, they *taste* like gourmet cooking. They're different every day, and I actually have trouble fitting some of our old favorites into the schedule.

Spouse could actually cook better than me when we got married !
Am not too bad now though.
We share the cooking but I tend to get home earlier in the week so it's usually me who starts something.

Birthdays<doh What are those
If my sons and friends didn't fill the house with flowers I wouldn't know when mine was. I have a spouse who views b'days as a wasle of money, a racket, a con, etc. The flowers make the place look like a funeral parlour
Apart from that he's not so bad a

Jules... Does Spouse know how you feel about birthdays? If so, can you drop hints?
I had a boyfriend who knew exactly how much I enjoyed birthdays and he took some evil pleasure in pointedly ignoring mine But when it came to his, he'd be really put out if I 'forgot'
