A throwaway comment - a joke - was picked up and run as actual news by the British media. 
That indicates a problem bigger than Murdoch... Even the BBC is tabloid now, and nobody seems to check their facts. It really is sad to see the decline in standards.

but a druggie pop star/s gets air/press time on a regular basis
