It's standard here to have a separate room for a laundry. In the case of both the old and the new house, it leads off the kitchen and has a door to the outside.
At the old house, the laundry ceiling slopes, and the idiot landlord had fitted a thoroughly inappropriate light fitting that stuck out at an odd angle just above head height. It was an accident waiting to happen.

Oooh, you could fit one of those ultra violet lights, so you can track down that missing smelly white sock that tries to escape its fate; dayglo washing powder too, wow, become a laundry freak!
