Yeah. There's some rules to that, but I agree it can get complicated.
Though kanji seems MUCH more complicated than Hebrew...

It's not so much complicated... picture=meaning (that's cool) it's just that the readings aren't phonetic and seem so aribtrary and specifically designed to thwart foreigners sometimes...
