> "I don't normally think of any dance having much more meaning"

Oh there's definitely the equivalent of sign-language in ballet - gestures which are supposed to be understood the same way. It's just that ballets don't contain a lot of such dialogue and the "language" isn't rich enough for real uses.

The only deaf people I've known preferred to lipread, and didn't know sign language. Their parents felt that lipreading would help them to integrate better with others.

I learned the alphabet once, but have forgotten it now. I can also say 'pig', 'cow', 'duck' and 'chicken', thanks to a kids' TV programme that's on some mornings. I guess I'd need a voiceover for the actual poetry.

Conducting looks a lot like dancing, too. I went to see Simon Rattle conducting Bartok once, and was deeply impressed and delighted at the way he used his whole body to convey meaning to the musicians.

I like to see sign language 'spoken' too.

Very graceful to watch.

I worked with a colleague who was deaf, and of course he taught me all the rude gestures too smiley - evilgrin!

He was very appreciative of peoples teeth.

I don't know if you've seen this being advertised on the BBC site yet, Snailrind:

The ham(p)sters ran away for most of yesterday; so it could be absolutely anything; the whole site died!

Oh, yeah: I forgot about yesterday's problems. It must have taken hours to round up all those hamsters and herd them back into the main server.

SEF, would it be possible for you to describe to me how to reach that removed link via Google or something? It sounds most intriguing!

It wasn't broken. That amendment to the post was just the usual sort of falsehood you can expect from round here.

Yes, I know damn well it wasn't broken. But since your links are getting removed anyway, is there another way you can direct me to the page, e.g. via Google? smiley - hug

Repeat due to mods being unable to recognise their own BBC links or server crashes:
