STRAW POLL: THE RETURN
Snailrind Posted Nov 17, 2005
This week, we are mostly doing refrains,
Refrains,
Refrains.
This week, we are mostly doing refrains.

I might offer to bend their minds around a villanelle, which is a stonkingly difficult form of refrain poetry; but I don't suppose any of them will take up the challenge.
Then again, ya never know. One or two of last week's crowd were bordering on my level of anorakness.

I can't believe it. THREE HOURS, and it's STILL hidden. This has got to be a record.

The only other researcher I’m aware of on pre-mod is Lord Wolfden, and I’m sure his posts are getting through a lot faster. How long does it usually take for SEF?

I'm surprised Lord Wolfden is on pre-mod. People really need to chill out around here!

It’s appeared!
I know, I can’t believe people are actually leaving over the matter, but I think things have come to a head now and hopefully it’ll chill out. I thought Lord Wolfden had improved, but I guess people weren’t ready to give up the fight

it is all very bleeding silly IMHO & i am getting very tired of it.
*Hiss*spit*
What in gods teeth is this vanilla poem stuff? Eeek, i am supposed to be a fully qualified English teacher, got Grade one in english language & never heard of this!
*takes deep breath...vanilla....
pod
custard
sulky infant skimming skin
Birds, why birds? Birds don't eat custard!
But that's merely a trifle.

Hundreds & thousands more like that sitting atop the sticky yellow skin, we are the créme de la créme, beneath lie the jellied isles; sulking sponges soak up the sherry.
Ah, life is not merely a bowl of cherries.....

Ah, SEF sneaked in one of those dreadful puns when I was least expecting it!
Actually, yes, they *are* allowed to refrain from doing it. They can do whatever they please, and my job is to help them with it in whatever way they ask for. It's something I particularly enjoy about the job, because I have to think on my feet--a skill I've only recently mastered. And I'm a little less nervous each time. The best thing of all is seeing the enthusiasm in their faces.
Sounds like you lot know more about the Lord Wolfden thing than I do. I've recently been following old threads, trying to find out how it all blew up, and all I can see is a bunch of seemingly rational people suddenly going fruitloop over a few glib comments. I get the impression I'm missing something, but heck knows what. If just one person was losing their rag, I'd think there must be something bad happening in their RL; but there's a whole bunch of them.
The other day I read Wolfden's thread on transport. Part of me wants to make it into a poem.
Yestarday I found an old thread I'd been in last year, with someone who may or may not have been a newbie. A particularly mean-spirited person appeared on the thread and verbally attacked her. I didn't press the yikes button, for three reasons:
1. I had seen this person doing their stalking, bullying thing elsewhere on h2g2, and did not want him and his friends to start doing it to me.
2. I had recently waded into another situation where a bunch of people were telling someone off, and I'd accused them of being a mob, and I had been duly mobbed.
3. I told myself that the victim could press the yikes button if she felt it was necessary.
Now I wish I had pressed it. Her PS has not been used since.
Terri, what's all this about vanilla and custard? Have you been on the cooking sherry?

The refrain idea went down well, though I say so myself. They wrote some crackin' stuff today.

I always hate this bit: I've done the lesson, and now I'm left with all the thoughts of what I could have done better.

Well make some notes and file them away safely, so that you can get them out for the next time you run this course somewhere. Is there some rule which says you aren't allowed to improve too, just because you're the teacher?
