Student loan wise you are safe until the april after you leave...although it might be worth telling them you've left in september. They send a form around chrismas and to be exempt you have to send them 3 months payslips (I didn't initially because I was temping and 3 months = 13 payslips).

The new system of student loans (I don't have to pay until I earn £20,000!!! but then I was only given £1500 a yr) is taken out of your paycheck as part of PAYE in the uk - I assume that if your abroad then technically you have to pay if your over £10,000 (but its only 9% of your earnings over that) and they would probably want to set up a direct debit...not sure though I expect you could just not tell them your address and deal with them when you get back....if you get back

I know that I'm exempt until April. *nods*.. but since I'm leaving.. uh.. now.. (and may not be in the country in April), I want to at least work out what's going to happen in April well in advance. Form? payslips? *looks confused*.. exempt from what?

*nods*.. I know. The problem is, abroad I wouldn't be paid in the same way, and so short of my sending them my entire fiscal records (), they'd have no way of telling how much I was earning. I have a suspicion they may expect me to pay a fixed amount, unless they're particularly trusting souls (this, I doubt).

I'm sure I'll sort something out. .. I just need to ring them up, and I keep procrastinating this.

If you're going to ring them up make sure you've got the afternoon free...I've spent up to 3 hrs on hold waiting to ask for another copy of the form (when I said exempt I meant deferring payments for a yr)

What they might be happy with is a letter from your future employer stating what your earnings are...and in most cases when you get a job you have to declare any other jobs so they should be able to confirm that its your only source of income. Oh and you don't have to declare most other sources - theyre only interested in trust funds or state benefits.

When you phone don't give them your name...ask all your questions anonymously and then phone them up again to arrange things.

Whilst I'm giving far too much away (and I'm in the process of writing this whole thing up in a guide entry), I don't want to explain it all in open forum just yet, saturnine. ..
