h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Yes, I was 'removed' from the Aces, due to my 'seeming rather curt of late' on the special Ace mailing list. 'Blunt' would be more precise. Why did I seem angry? Because I was.

The Assistant Community Editors group, which I was invited to join back at its inception - before The Foop (the downtime after the BBC quietly and arbitrarily bought out h2g2.com and held our content hostage, while laying claim to anything we may have written and been willing to donate to a small DNA-led company but not to a conglomerate like BBC), started out as a group of people who had already been wandering around h2g2 looking for new members, trying to make them feel welcome. This was our purpose, nothing more. I was very fond of that group, as I was very fond of h2g2 back when it was mostly fields and was run with individualism in mind.

However, we were infiltrated (and eventually led by) a faction who were more interested in policing h2g2 than making anyone feel welcome. I voiced my opinion several times, and as the conversation kept reverting back to "look at this page, shouldn't it be yikesed?" and "Is this person someone we all hate. It must be the same one, no?" This list is where they talk about you behind your back. I was fed up with the nonsense. Personally, I'm glad to finally be rid of it.

When they finally got round to telling us why h2g2 was shut down on one of the off-site groups, and who bought it, I predicted then that the place would go down the tubes. As far as I'm concerned, I was right.

There are still a few people around from the old days, and I have nothing but respect for them, and I miss them, but I don't know if I can ever be comfortable with the place again. It's not looking to good in that respect, considering the number of years in which it hasn't happened.

This journal entry just reminded me of why I ditched the Aces and took up Scouting instead... only to give up on Scouting and turn to the Uni projects... only to lose all interest in producing anything further for the edited Guide. If this site didn't get a steady stream of newbies to keep its purported mission going, it would have been shut down by now.

This place is a chat room for me now, and as chat rooms go, it's not really much better than any other. There's still some people I like to talk to, but other than that I really don't have any special reason to be here.

Anyway, just wanted to say, from one old-timer to another, that I feel your pain.

WOW, mouse. i came by your page, just looking up old, familiar people.. i had no idea (until returning after being gone for years) that so MANY old-timers had disappeared.. and not only because of RL issues. i thought for sure you'd still be here!

i remember when i signed on.. it was such a free and open community. by the time i left, i was fed up with the hassle that came from just circulating among friends. I dropped my membership, ACE-hood and all, and opted for RL.

well, i've dropped in a few times here and there, but i have to say, i missed it. so much so that when i got DSL at home, it's one of the first accounts i re-opened!

have you come across any community sites that are like the old h2g2? so far it seems pretty tame here now, but who knows...

i have to agree with all that wsa said above i was her for about 1year (or was it less zax) befoer anti took over and thiks changed allot they stoped me swering for a start which i profoundly disaprove of the words are in the dictanary atre they not.

i dout there is another one like h2g2 used to be it was kind of uneqe they are eather cencerd as muchas this one or people trying to get you for porn and cyber sex from wt ive seen. once i win the lottery i will just have to make my own

It's funny, I ACE'd loads of people before the BBC took over. I've got a drop down menu at my place that lists all the people I've ACE'd since a certain date (after the beeb took over). I don't think even one of them still hangs out here.... Where did I go wrong?
