Smij - Formerly Jimster

Yesterday evening I recorded some comments for a radio broadcast that will be going out tomorrow night (Friday 29 April). I understand it'll be part of National Public Radio's 'On Point', a nationally syndicated evening news program produced out of WBUR, the Boston affiliate.

Actually, I just copied and pasted that last bit from an email I received prior to the event. I hadn't realised it was syndicated nationally.

smiley - yikes

Aaanyway, I recorded my bits via one of the radio studios under BBC TV Centre, just me, our PR man and a box of flashing lights. I'm sure they'll be able to edit it into something coherent. I tried to big up some of the entries we have about America, including 'We Didn't Start the Fire', that fantastic project spearheaded by Master B, and Jimi X's contribution to Pennsylvanian historican research (although I had to ask for a retake on my first attempt on that because with all the info I was trying to pull out of my head at once, Jimi was suddenly transplanted to Philly by accident, so I'm just hoping if they use that bit they get the right take. Oh! the shame. (Sorry Jimi!)

Then I read out a couple of sample sections from h2g2 Entries, including a lovely piece about the aquarium in Boston where they show you how the salmon spawns and then you can find out how it tastes in the adjacent restaurant.

Anyway, if anyone's out there and listening, it should be on some time between 2 and 4PM EST.

Which thankfully I won't be able to hear. smiley - biggrin

Blast I missed it too...

I'll be in my car a good bit tonight, maybe they'll rebroadcast it.

And Jims, never, *never* confuse Philadelphia with the rest of Pennsylvania. Just because we all support it with our tax dollars doesn't mean we like it. smiley - tongueout

No-one missed it (unfortunately smiley - winkeye ) - it's *this afternoon*, EST. 2 - 4pm.

I think I might have also used Jodan as an example of how someone specialises, citing the on-going histories of dead Presidents. It's all a blur really.

Speaking of which, how far have you got with that one, Jodan? It sets a really high benchmark for anyone else. I know DD was doing something similar with Liberal leaders, and we do have a few odd entries about British Prime Ministers, but I wonder which premier project would be completed first?

Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Grant and Lincoln are all Presidents who have been written about by me. I'm thinking of doing some Founding Father presidents soon too.

I've just listened to it (starts as GreyDesk said, 43 mins in).

I suspect I was using examples of American researchers to represent loads of different people, as I was about to tell them about Bluebottle's efforts to chart the history of the Isle of Wight until I realised that most Americans wouldn't know where that is. So 'a young fella from Ohio' became a kind of 'everyman' figure - someone who comes to the site, doesn't know what it all means necessarily, but finds their own way - brilliantly.

I *hope* that's how it comes across. It amazes us that people like yourselves find the site and find ways to contribute that we'd never imagine. I also hope you get to play that bit to your tutors or family, Jodan.

It amazes me that, thanks to the wonders of technology, it sounds like I was in the studio with them rather than on the other side of the Atlantic. I just hope they can understand my vaguely Scouse accent smiley - biggrin

Blue Bird

Note RE.: h2g2
The Hitchhiker was released nationally in US on FridayApr.29.05.
I went to see it on Tue 1PM when one can have almost a private show in this local movie-theater.
On a nice sunny day few people go to the see a movie in the middle
of the day.

It was very touching after the movie ended that on the huge big dark screen
Light letters came up: “ For Douglas”
I felt very sad, that He could not see this. But His greatest contribution
(In my opinion) is the establishment of the forum h2g2 through BBC.

I shall write about my views and feelings regarding this work of art = the movie based on "The Hitchhiker.." in my journal. smiley - bluebird smiley - smiley
