Okay, that's it, pull the plug!

It was one year ago today, about this time of day, that we pulled the plug on h2g2 and started the 'Rupert' downtime.

It was so weird, one minute we were chatting on site as usual, the next it was gone and we all sat there looking at each other.

We had lots of work to do still, but for the first hour or so we all sat around, congratulating each other on on the fact that we'd just found out that the BBC were taking us over, and that we did infact have jobs, and that we were actually going to be able to pay some of the bills that we'd ran up over the last very difficult unpaid Christmas.

It seems ages ago now... How weird! Were you there? Do you remember the Rupert?

At least you knew what was happening, you didn't just suddenly get some ugly message like http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A685497 on your screen! smiley - bigeyes
What a shock that was! smiley - yikes

Thanks for still being here! smiley - biggrin

I'm not really here

It was one of the worst moments of my life. Of course I remember it!
Still, if it happens again, at least I'll be on the inside. smiley - smiley

A year ago already?

Doesn't seem possible in a way. The whole yahoogroups things was by far the worst part of the experience for me - that and all the crazy rumours that kept popping up that you guys were joining the microsoft network, were joining the cia, were joining the PLO.

What ever happened to all that? smiley - winkeye

I'm very glad that traumatic episode was over. You can't believe how happy I was to be an ace/guru/whatever, and get to test the bbc version... I dnot' know if I could've survived anymore of the withdrawal symptoms! smiley - winkeye

Hello Peta!!

More plugs got pulled lately and still us froods survive!
Last year's unplugging of StarshipTitanic (where we first met in 1998) and a week ago the DouglasAdams.com site became read only.

Sad things that shock communities. Sometimes a metaphore with ants comes to mind ... they find a new track to a new place when shattered.

Keep the happy froods together.

Hi Silvercurl!

I was really shocked when I heard the DNA site had turned to a read only one! That's sad, Douglas enjoyed the community. smiley - sadface

Still at least we can still welcome the refugees over here. smiley - ok It's not the same but at least there's a place still associated with Douglas. smiley - smiley

I am neglecting a good forum I think.
Partly work is busy and partly I just take too little time to see how this forum works.

Gradually again with both feet back on the ground I think the DNA site could have stayed a chat place as well with only slight modifications.

Anyway, that the good parts (and all history) are preserved is much more important.

-= now, when will I look in here again? =-

PS; Rupert???
