I am happy to see, then, that you have indeed adopted a fine approach. Learn from as many as possible, sort out what works, and share that combined knowledge with others. What more can we hope to accomplish in this life?

Most any belief system, I have found, breaks down under too much scrutiny; at least to the extent of agreement with and precision of tenets and dogma. As an example, we all know that there were, at one time, several claims to the direct line of popedoms, and that some earthly king decided to clear away the mess by naming the 'proper' successor to the line that began with Peter (sic). Hardly a biblical method of God determining who's who. No forbidden fruit, no burning bushes, no dreams, no leading of people to freedom; what kind of selection process is that?

The Mormons once embraced polygamy, and now eschew it. The Bible didn't change, but they did.

The Church of England began when a horny king did not like the strictures of the Vatican. Where's the sense in that?

Yes, it's good to study, learn, and think. This does, however, point back to some of the randomness that seems to envelop much of the human condition. Again, my personal beliefs (although not important) are simply a result of my personal journey. The average person may not see the sense in them. They're just my simple attempt to find agreement between the theological, scientific, and metaphysical viewpoints that allow me to continue striving and existing.

Enjoy the journey. A thousand steps is not too many to identify a need for a course correction.

Did you read my guide entry about Wycliff?

The roots of the Anglican church go far before Henry VIII. Yes he took advantage of them but his was just the top of the spear.

At one time there were three claims to the Papacy (briefly) and they all claimed the others were apostate (go figure)Two sent out armies to conquer the others!

Hello - didnt have time to read the whole thread- maybe later. Love Hitchhikers, thought the film was OK. Good for entertainment value but you need to know the book/radio progam before seeing it so the film was more a 'paint the pictures' exercise!

I shall check out the entry!

Sounds like the Catholic hierarchy, eh? Starting wars to decide things; sounds like the crusades, with a bit of the Spanish Inquisition thrown in for good measure.

PS: I'm not anti-catholic, but its history is its history.
