You know something? I think a lot of grief would be saved if we just did away with the state altogether and let the Christians handle their own affairs in their own communities. That would of course mean they'd have to live in their own communities and leave others to live in theirs, unmolested.
Fat chance right? Because we know that's why the state was invented in the first place. To keep the Christians from cutting each other's and everybody else's throats.

Well, it didn't stop with the crusades of course. In fact the nationstate per se arose in response to the religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries and then the crusades started all over again quite recently.
