2nd October - Audition time again
David B - Singing Librarian Owl Started conversation Oct 2, 2005
Well, I have returned from the frightening worrisomeness that was my audition for Me and My Girl (amateur production, I'm not going to turn into a full-time waiter who sometimes gets paid to pretend to be someone else).
It was...OK, I guess, it's very hard to tell. There wasn't all that much in the way of competition for the male roles, and I think I may have been the only auditionee for the part of Gerald who can reach the top notes, which has to be encouraging. The panel seemed to enjoy my singing and acting, but of course they have to smile nicely at everyone, so I'm not sure how much attention I should pay to that.
The big problem is the dancing. I'm not a dancer. Have you ever seen a dancing owl? Or a dancing librarian for that matter? They got us to learn a couple of routines, one to 'Me and My Girl' which was soft-shoe type stuff and which I managed to do pretty darned well I think, and the other a breif bit of tap to 'he Sun Has Got His Hat On', and this is where I fell apart. I could do the second part of the dance, but not the first part for some reason, so I sort of wobbled around a bit until the second half where I suddenly started doing some actual dancing. As this is Gerald's main song, I think I might have a bit of a problem! I'm hoping that they decide they can either train me or work around my incompetence.
I really, really, really want the part of Gerald, and even though I enjoy doing chorus work, I think I will be rather gutted if I don't get it. One of the guys auditioning for Bill (the lead role) was fab and I think I'd enjoy working with him if we both get it, but I'm not so sure about the girls I'd potentially be playing opposite, although I'm sure they're not as scary as I think they are. I will hear yay or nay some time this week by post and will be ever so slightly nervous until a short while after I open the envelope (if I can bring myself to do it!).
End of incoherent audition rambling. I will return to this post with the good or bad news once I know! In the mean time, help yourself to comfort food.

Oooh how exciting. Remember that you do it all for fun, so don't get too stressed about it all.

Oh, I know it's all for fun, but there are a whole host of silly reasons why this means an awful lot more to me than it really ought to. But this is a great chorus show, so at least I'll have lots to do regardless of the outcome.

David, I wish I was close enough to watch you perform. I always wanted to do things like that. My ambitions were, however, thwarted by a total lack of talent. I can't carry a tune and as for dancing - well, it isn't a pretty sight. I can be quite dramatic, though. It's genetic.

Dancing too! I have difficulty walking and chewing never mind singing AND dancing.
Why were the girls scary? They weren't luvvies were they?

They were scary due to generally being much older than me (so much so that it would be obvious from the audience) and being very good dancers indeed. They all seem very nice, but I'm not convinced that I'd have a particular on-stage chemistry with any of them. A couple of them were a bit luvvie-ish, but you should always expect a few luvvies around the place!
I am just about to go home to check my post (I live within 15 mins walking distance of my w**kplace, so can easily pop home at lunch breaks).

There was nothing yesterday, either. Maybe today. I can't stand the waiting!

How long does it usually take to find out?
As my dear old poppa always said as he was watching me pace up and down waiting to hear about something, "Wearing a hole in the carpet won't make the peaches ripen."

I was told that I'd hear by post, and that the decision would be made Sunday evening. So...things put in post on Monday, should have got here by now (post within the same city is normally very quick). I checked at lunch time, and still nothing. I shall distract myself with a good book tonight.

Well, at general chorus rehearsal tonight, some of the casting was announced. They're still working on some of the parts, largely because they haven't completely decided on their Bill/Sally combination (the leads). The part of Gerald *has* been cast, however...
and
my
reaction
to
the
casting
is
very
simple:
I'm going to be very busy for the next six months, leading up to March 21st-25th!
all round!
