I'm going to college!
Apollyon - Grammar Fascist Started conversation Sep 12, 2004
OK tommorrow there's some sort of advice thingy on which modules to register for, which should be a bit of a laugh. On Wimpy (aka Tuesday) there's the actual registration and an orientation thingimajig, then on Wibble (Wednesday) actual lectures start.
Any questions? (<--There's no point to this bit, it just sounds right.)

Yeah, they do have a student union. There's one for each college and one for all students.
I'm aiming for microbiology. Thanks for the encouragement!

Very cool, man, very cool.
Biology is a fun subject.

Hey Chronos, haven't seen you in a while!
Now I get to use a lab coat, dissecting kit, safety goggles, and various other stuff - just like a real scientist.
The Students Union shops and restaurents are also seriously cheap. For example, outside, and Irish Times costs E1.50; insode, it's just 80c. I had to pay almost E190 for my books, so I HOPE they were also cheap.
I'm just so happy right now...

Check the internet for your books- chances are you got ripped off
Here, the student union gouges us students. They just raised prices by 10 cents on just about everything, too.

Funny thing about the books - they were printed in the USA but we have the international editions, specifically NOT for sale in North America. Deaspite this, half the words are still spelt wrong - I mean, only in the USA will you see it spelt 'kilogram.'
Our students union is great - last year the government tried to reintroduce college fees and they organised protests against it, which worked. If they failed, we would have had to pay about E5,000 extra.
Clubs day was on on Tuesday and Societies day was yesterday. I have signed up for Tae Kwon Do, Archery, Paintballing, Pro-Life Society, Chocolate Soc, Fansci Soc, Go-Kart Soc, Bahá'í Soc, and probably a couple of others I've forgotten about already.
Today there was a treasure hunt just for freshers all over campus. My fried and I formed a team, but quit when the clues got too cryptic and we weren't really enjoying ourselves.
On Tuesday there was a quiz and karaoke contest as part of freshers week. The quiz was supposedly what they should have asked in the Leaving Cert. Points went for correct answers, extra for silly answers, plus a bonus prize for silliest team name. I was on the Quiz-Hating Team, and we didn't win anything. The winner of silliest name was Elephants Eating Peanuts in Lifts. The official worst names were Team USA, Fathers For Justice, and To Be Confirmed. A few gems from the quiz:
If Johnny has six apples and gives two oranges to Mary, what are his chances? [This was in the Maths section]
What is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis?
Spell pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
What was after English on a Monday?
Since English is such a s*** subject, why is so much time given to it?
An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas? [Irish for 'Can I go to the toilet?' The answer we gave was 'Níl. You have blueballs and we know about the animals.]
How long is a piece of string? [verbatim]
Why is a toaster? [again, verbatim]
Who invented the Leaving Cert? [correct answer: Satan].
There were also quite a few spot prizes for various silly things. At one point, two guys had one minute to get as many ladies shoes as they could. When the shoes were collected again, one girl was isolated and pulled up onto the stage for having such crap ones {some sort of blue frilly boot...} and for punishment, had to choose between singing a song, drinking a pint of out of her shoe, or kissing twenty other people. She didn't use her tongue.
After that there was a karaoke contest, where I won a walkman for murdering 'Dancing Queen.'
All in all, fun fun fun. I have my frist lab session tomorrow, so it gets better! I'm so happy right now!
I wonder if this is what happened to Deus Ex Machina...? I won't be online much for a while, but I will still keep track of my convos, maybe post here occasionally, and keep writing for . See you in some indeterminate time...

Oh yeah, just remembered. I got a mobile phone yesterday. Didn't want one, but my mom insisted. Still, perhaps I can use this as a bargaining chip in acquiring a laptop...
Over the first few days, all the frehsers were given several bags of free stuff. This was mostly leaflets and flyers, but also:
A Lucozade special water
A Twix
A tube of instant coffee
A Fanta
A condom
A teabag
A card for 10% off jeans
A CD voucher.
At socs day, several stalls were giving aout books of vouvhers, so I now have enough to get E200 off a PC.

Yeah, there's tons of free stuff when school starts! All the free plastic cups I got helped me start my kitchen!
Glad you're enjoying yourself!

Jerms - a Brief flicker and then gone again. Posted Sep 27, 2004
"...only in the USA will you see it spelt 'kilogram.'" Gah! Obviously we use american spelling for that too! So how do /you/ spell it? (ie how is it supposed to be spelt? )
Hope you keep having fun there, Hussassan!
